HR Orion’s Wilderness Echo (aka Echo) was purchased as a puppy and as a future mate for Blaze. She was out of FC-AFC Wilderness Harley To Go who was a great producer of AKC field trial dogs in his time. He was awarded the Thomas G. Merit Award in 1998 and 1999 which is awarded annually to the Field Trial Champion who sired the greatest number of progeny which in the previous calendar year acquired points in Open All-Age, Limited All-Age, or Special All-Age AKC field trial competition.

Echo was one of few yellow Labs that I have owned. She was an excellent marker. She was able to mark and remember as many as six falls at a time. She made an inexperienced trainer/handler like me look good at hunt tests. Echo also had a great nose which she used to our advantage while hunting bobwhite quail and ring-necked pheasant. She was a pointing Lab, although none of her ancestors had been bred for that trait.

Echo was bred only twice, once to Blaze and once to FC-AFC River Oaks Way-Da-Go Rocky. Her mating to Blaze produced my outstanding HR Orion’s Blazin’ Star CD who has become the standard against which I measure my Orion bitches. In her life and through her legacy, Echo has had a great impact on Orion Labradors. Like Blaze, Echo needed only one Finished pass in UKC Hunting Retriever Club testing to attain the title, “Hunting Retriever Champion”. However, judging from her performance during the 1,000+ miles she led me through the uplands and the hundreds of quail and pheasant that she flushed and retrieved for me on those hunts, there is no doubt in my mind that she was a true Champion!
